Why We Answer Laser Treatment Questions Honestly

Laser clinics have a reputation for overselling. We built this page to do the opposite. Below are the laser treatment questions people in Niagara ask us most. We answer them the way we would answer a friend.

Some answers may talk you out of a treatment. That is fine with us. If you want the science first, start with how laser treatments actually work.

The basics

The Basics of Laser Treatments

Does laser treatment hurt?

A little, for most people. Each pulse feels like a quick snap of heat, and it passes fast. Most people find it easy to tolerate. Sensitive spots like the upper lip sting more than legs or backs. We adjust settings and pace so you stay comfortable throughout.

How long does a session take?

Between 15 and 60 minutes for most treatments. A small area like the upper lip takes about 15 minutes. Full legs or a back can take closer to an hour. Facial treatments sit in the middle. We confirm timing when we map your plan.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

Arrive with clean skin: no makeup, lotion, or sunscreen on the area. For hair removal, shave the day before, but do not wax or pluck. Skip self-tanner that week too. Our guide to what to expect at your visit covers the full checklist.

Is IPL the same as a laser?

No. IPL is a broadband light source, not a true laser. It sends many wavelengths at once, while a laser sends exactly one. IPL still treats diffuse redness and brown spots well. See how our IPL photofacial compares before you decide between them.

Results and Sessions: What to Expect

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the treatment. Hair removal usually takes 6 to 8 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. RF microneedling usually needs 3 to 4. A clinical review of laser hair removal explains why hair must be treated across growth cycles. Your exact plan is set at your Niagara consult.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

No honest clinic can promise that. What lasers deliver is long-term hair reduction. Treated follicles stop producing hair, but hormones and time can wake others. Most people see a lasting drop in growth, with finer and lighter regrowth. An occasional touch-up keeps things smooth.

When will I see results?

Hair removal shows shedding within one to three weeks after each session. Skin treatments like resurfacing and pigment removal improve over several weeks as collagen rebuilds. Scars keep softening between visits. Some changes appear fast, but the best results usually arrive a few months into your series.

Can hair or pigment come back later?

Sometimes, yes. Hormonal shifts can trigger new hair growth years later, especially on the face. Sun spots can return if the skin gets new sun damage. Melasma in particular is known for coming back. We would rather tell you that up front than surprise you later.

Candidacy

Will Laser Treatment Work for Me?

Can I get treated while I have a tan?

Not right away. A tan loads the skin with extra melanin, which raises the risk of burns and pigment change. We ask you to wait until the tan fades, usually a few weeks. That includes spray tans and tanning beds.

Can lasers treat melasma?

Carefully, and with honest expectations. Melasma is hormonal and famously stubborn, so we use conservative settings and go slowly. It can fade well and still return after sun or hormonal changes. Read why melasma is a special case before you book, and plan on strict sun protection.

Safety

Laser Safety and Side Effects

What side effects are normal?

Redness and mild swelling, a bit like a light sunburn, for a few hours to a few days. Some treatments cause temporary darkening or lightening of the skin, which usually settles. Our guide to laser safety across skin types explains what is routine and what is not.

What are the serious risks?

Burns, blisters, scarring, and lasting pigment change can happen, though they are rare with correct settings. A published review of ablative laser resurfacing lists pigment change and scarring among the main complications. Risk drops sharply when the wavelength matches your skin. That match is what we assess at your consult.

Who should talk to a doctor before booking?

Anyone who is pregnant, taking isotretinoin, or has a mole that is changing shape or colour. The same goes for active skin infections or a history of keloid scarring. Check with your doctor first, then tell us everything at your consultation. An honest health history protects you.

Booking

Booking and Visits in Niagara

How do I book an appointment?

Call our Niagara clinic or send the form on our contact page. Every new client starts with a consultation, not a treatment. We look at your skin and hair, talk through your goals, and map a plan. Then you decide whether to go ahead.

What happens at the consultation?

We review your health history, medications, and sun habits. We assess your skin type and the area you want treated, then match a wavelength to it. You get an honest read on sessions, results, and risks. It takes about 30 minutes, and your laser treatment questions are welcome.

Do I need a referral?

No. Cosmetic laser treatments in Ontario do not require a doctor's referral. You can book a consultation with us directly. If you have a medical concern, like a changing mole, see your doctor first. Otherwise, call or use the form and we will find you a time.

Where are you located?

We serve Niagara, Ontario, and the surrounding region. Clients visit us from across the Niagara area for both cosmetic and medical laser treatments. We confirm visit details when you book. If you are unsure whether we are close enough, call and ask.

Still have laser treatment questions we did not cover? Browse the full list of laser treatments we offer, or see the conditions we treat. You can also ask us directly through our contact page. We would rather answer one more question than book one wrong treatment.
